My sister was coming to visit so I suggested it straight away. Why not spend a week island-hopping and relaxing in the beach?
The typical Croatia tour involves renting a boat, and exploring the islands. However, my sister wasn't keen on the boat trip so we ended organising it by land.
First stop would be Dubrovnik. 3 days. Then half day in Split. The rest in Hvar and other islands.
It was raining (dissappointingly) in the sunniest city in Europe. 'You are not in luck' they kept saying, 'this is very unusual'.
Dubrovnik
The shuttle from the airport ( £4) dropped us outside the old town walls. No cars are allowed in. So we walked ourselves inside, passing by a few men chanting in roman costumes at the entrance.
And then, we were there... surrounded by this magical city, with small side streets, medieval stoned architecture, engulfed by huge walls. And behind those, a perfect blue green sea. It's a romantic place to... And have to say that the main audience is either couples or old people. It's amazing how some cities are marked by different age groups.
Don't think this is a place one would want to visit alone. However, there is a hostel (Fresh Sheets hostel) I found out, so it might be allright.
Dubrovnik is tiny. You walk and discover it in a few days. There are only few 'musts' you need to do if you visit.
Walks: Around the walls and see the city from the top. Amazing views.
Bar/Cafe: Buza - beautiful cafe in the old city but outside of the walls so an amazing view to the sea. Ask around how to get there. Go!
Other places we visited while in Croatia
Split - we were pleasantly surprised with the old city. Do try to visit it as there's a lot of history in it.
Hvar - this island has a great party atmosphere, however people tend to be in their twenties. There are few bars on the main street and you'll meet people there.
Other islands
Visit Palmizana from Hvar (60 kn ) and go to Langanini lounge bar, and spend your day there. We also had dinner in Zori in Palmizana, however did not think it was that special.
How to get to the islands
There are 2 ferry lines that take you to/from Split to Hvar. Check online.
- Jarlineas - 55 kn
- Pellegrini - 70kn
There is also one ferry that goes from Dubrovnik to Hvar but it is not frequent at all. Some people don't even know it exists. But it does.
